Through the 19 eighties, no historical scholar signed on to this theory. And the basically the theory faded out through 19 nineties. But then it was taken up again and woven into a new fictional myth of the grail by dan brown. That has given a sort of whole new second life to this theory as a symbol of a physical reality. So in this way, by by entertaining this sort of crackpot theory, one can have your cake and eat it too.
