The idea of canon is something that kind of gradually coalesces in the catholic tradition. It's not formally defined in an eciemetical council until the sixteenth century at trent. Protestants will sometimes appeal back to the muriturian canon, and that will form in part the reason for the exclusion of the so called apocryphal books are duetoo canonical books.
