Your money in your bank account is protected up to 85 grand per person, per institution by the financial services compensation scheme. For the government to then set up its own bank would be a really, really big investment. To get the Bank of England to do that would also be very tricky. And so, what would probably happen is it would probably be contracted out to somebody.
