The History of Spain
Portugal had a huge colonial empire for its size, and managing its interests abroad took up a lot of the government's time and effort. By the late 1700s, the colonies, in particular Brazil, were becoming so wealthy and developed that they almost eclipsed European Portugal and economic importance. This trend worried Portuguese political leaders who thought it could create political problems, or even lead to Brazil declaring independence.
