The english had waged a war against the poor, especially vagrants and vagabonds, for generations. The most ardent early promoters of colonization envisioned the american colony as one giant workhouse. American colonies were emunctories, excruding human waste from the body. In 16 22, the famous poet and clergyman, john dan wrote of virginia in this fashion, describing the new colony as the nation's spleen and liver to breed good blood. Maybe the first thing to know about America is that it was born is a profit making enterprise.
