A lot of this was based on hypothetical biological thinking predicated on the work of Malthus and it's sort of a yeast or rat model of human existence. The view that just you just described is particular popular amongst biologists. Economists don't think like that because they recognize that human beings are fundamentally different from rats or deer or rabbits or whatever else or yeast, we have this thing called intelligence in order to come up with innovations which can get around the problem of scarcity. It isn't that we're losing our sense of time - these things are complex and if your theory is wrong, then quit terrifying everyone too. And I think the same thing applies to all this climate doom as well
