It's not just an academic exercise in how to capture your own image and yourself is she trying to wrestle with what it means for her as a woman, he says. She paints this portrait to gain promotion and when it goes to the committee they refuse to believe that an artist of her age she's 19 at the time would have been able to paint such an accomplished planner portrait. To be honest I think they did her a great favor because she dines out on this anecdote for the rest of her artistic career.
