The Struggle to Expand the Voting Rights Act
In 1965, there was a big push to expand the Voting Rights Act. But then it was expanded because Latinos in South Texas were facing same issues as black people in Mississippi. And so I tell this story of Modesto Rodriguez who lived south of San Antonio. He testified that a lot of the same things were happening to him that were happening to African Americans. In 1975, ten years after the passage of the voting rights act, people were still being brutally assaulted by law enforcement for trying to exercise their right to vote.
