The Twelve Chairs

The Twelve Chairs is Mel Brooks's second, probably least known movie. The Westgate went for another film in the same odd vein: Carl Reiner's 1971 dark comedy Where's Papa? Why did these movies work at the Westgate when they'd fail everywhere else? That'll always be a mystery. It snowballed. Word of mouth, I think, was the biggest thing. They booked them exclusive so that it was the only theater in town that could play it. And then people would come to see it and they'd go, this is the greatest thing I've seen in ages.
