Why Is Special Relativity So Important?

Special relativity is one of our main theories about the universe. It's called special because it applies to scenarios where space is flat. The rules that work at slow speeds down here on earth no longer apply. If you push the boundaries and start going fast, the universe reveals things we thought were true are not actually true. They break our notion of like simultaneity and the idea of time being universal.
