Building A Quantum Computer with Light

Azeem Azhar's Exponential View

CHAPTER

Quantum Computing Is a Big Idea and I'm Curious About It

The first integrated circuit was demonstrated in 1962 and it had 16 transistors. By 1971 the 2004 had 2,350 transistors and in 2019 cerebras demonstrated a chip on a wafer with 1.2 trillion transistors so we're already at that sort of trillions per wafer to build a working traditional classical computer scale. I'm persuaded that there are incredible applications for quantum computing and nitrogen fixation being one in carbon dioxide sequestration being another both of which are multi trillion dollar and civilization level challenges that we should address. But why not more money has gone into quantum computing? It's measured in terms of financial investment by venture capitalists in sort of the billion dollar or less range which is tiny
