Tomas monn's first great novel, the budden brooks, was apparently a nineteenth century naturalistic novel. He was letting certain motifs show themselves in a musical way through the course of the work. There has been nothing since of this magnitude in inthe fields of the arts. Toto give tat man used a wagnerian device to begin to let the mythic thines come up,. namely that of the epic epithet or the like motif.
