Abby was assistant lightkeeper at the North Lighthouse Tower in Rockland, New England. She did this while caring for her three younger sisters and her mother who was chronically ill. In January of 1856 a tremendous gale lashed the island, damaging the portion of the keeper's house where Abby's mother had formally slept. A storm continued relentlessly for three days, flooding the island knee-deep in icy waters. Before the storm was over, a huge wave had completely destroyed the keeper’s house. Over her mother's objections, she took advantage of a lull in the storm to wade out to the chicken coop. Incredibly, she was able to save all but one
