The Success of the Chinese Navy in Hainan
The Chinese navy was able to take Hainan Island from Taiwan in 1950. The PLA did everything right, including gathering as much intelligence as possible and having the logistical infrastructure for amphibious operations. They actually deployed what we now call anti-access area of the Nile forces using air defense artillery to keep the air clear of nationalist air units that might harass and interdict the coming offensive.
