Is Pro-Calcitonin Really Effective?

I rarely, if ever, recommend a Pro-Calcitonin in the hospital. I usually use it more in support of my clinical reasoning and guiding the consulting group into what I think is the best course of action for that patient. We do see it ordered quite frequently, as I'm sure many of the listeners do as well. It's just how are you really applying that Pro- Calcitonin value to your management? I don't think many know the answer.
