Amino acids are the building blocks that make up all the proteins in your body. You need to eat amino acids or consume them through food or through some type of supplement so you can have really healthy proteins, most fundamental level. So I think another angle of looking at this is thinking about it as macronutrients. The primary role of carbohydrates and of fat are energy. Proteins can be used for that same purpose but their main role is to help you rebuild the proteins inside your body.
