The Origins of Religious Mysticism

I was anorexic. I was living in a religious community that over a number of years I came to understand as primarily a gay community, not in any explicit or expressed way, but in a kind of sublimated spiritual way. And so me working through all of that with actually a psychoanalyst who was a monk as well was really the origins of my thinking along these lines. Freud saved my life, literally. I think I would have died in my mid-20s of starvation or something coming out of the anorexia if Freud and psychoanalysis wouldn't have turned that around.
