How Do Scientists Know if an Animal Is Extinct?

Ocavinu: How do scientists know if an animal is extinct? Do they look everywhere physically and couldn't find that animal? The fantastic giant tortoise, which was believed to have gone extinct, has been found alive recently. Ocavinu says some animals are very it's very hard to say if the are extint or not.
