The early church was almost essentially nonviolent for the first 300 years of its existence. They showed compassionate care for the poor and stayed in cities during plagues to care for the sick. Christians did not see partnership with the states as a means to spread Christianity. And they willingly went to martyrdom while praying for their captors.
