William and mary took up rulership jointly although really effectively the ruler actually was william mary herself was relatively withdrawn not as interested in politics. The rationale for his accession to the throne was so flimsy it depended on various very tenuous claims piled one on top of another. It depended on the idea that james had abdicated from his throne by retreating to france and furthermore it depended upon the idea that parliament could somehow bestow joint title of rulership onto two rulers. These things were really unprecedented and hence the subtext here was really clear that really in effect parliament had chosen the rulers that it preferred.
