The Motivation for the Theory of Inflation

The Big Bang Theory tells us that the universe started out in a state of infinite density, and then expanded outwards over time. The theory is very well accepted today, but it does leave us with some unanswered questions. In the 1970s, cosmologists were dealing with what they called the flatness problem. And this has only gotten worse as we've measured these things better. But an empirical fact, an observational fact is that our universe is remarkably uniform.
