Is This How You Think and React?

I've worked with a lot of people where we've gone through this and they're like, oh wow, this is so much better I don't get stuck anymore. But when it comes out they sort of reverted back to the top down approach and they're trying to create abstractions without writing the code first or understanding the code first. Don't feel bad if you sort of revert to that previous pattern I think it's very natural, but I think this definitely pays off. And in my experience leads to really good results.
