John Parsons Cook won 3,000 pounds in 1855 on a horse race. That seems like a pretty big purse to me for a horse race, but what do I know? He's not feeling any better the next day and says he suspects one of their mutual friends might have dosed him. This is a prime motive for why violent crime occurs.
