The Difference Between Data-Centric and Algorithmic Approaches to Machine Learning

With the previous approaches to machine learning that were very algorithm-centric, you needed to have really subject matter experts who were both data scientists and software developers. That used to be a little bit less common. And there weren't enough of those people in the world to write to custom algorithms for each different use case.
