The Establishment Clause in the US Constitution
Phillips' approach would allow forms of state aid to religion that the Supreme Court has prohibited. John Adams referred to the Massachusetts system as an establishment. The Massachusetts Constitution authorized both a direct religious taxes and also authorized towns to require attendance at church for those who could conscientiously do so.
