The History of Voodoo in New Orleans

Voodoo often gets presented as a hokey caricature of what is for many a serious religion. The word voodoo conjures up images of top hat wearing men in skull makeup, wearing necklaces made of bones and brandishing little dolls stuck through with pins. Voodoo's most recognizable emblem, the voodoo doll, was actually used extremely rarely in both traditional Haitian and Louisiana voodoo. Torturing someone in effigy form is far more common in European magical traditions.
