The History of the Brooklyn Navy Yard

In 1876, the USS Trenton became the last wooden vessel with sails to be manufactured here. The Navy Yard was now but one portion of a heavily trafficked industrial waterfront which ran from Newtown Creek down to Red Hook. Among the tenements in row houses were coal yards, chemical plants, grocers and many, many saloons.
