The sources about columbus are pretty consistent in saying that he ame from the italian city of genoa, which was a northern italian maritime port a and one of the main rivals to venice as the sort of italian naval power on the mediterranean. We don't know if columbus was his real name. There's no early enough record confirming that that was his name by birth. When columbus himself was asked about who he was and where he came from, he would simply say, vine de nara, i came from nothing. He never gave an explanation of his own background.
