Tolstoy is a bit hopeful, he's not hopeful for the present but he's hopeful that in the future we will learn to return to a sort of religious consciousness. His main theory in what is art is this idea of infecting other people with this feeling of unity, brotherhood and how the measure of a piece of art's worth is how infectious its moral feelings are.
