Child Labor
The UNICEF progress for children report published every year tracks the economic activities of children between the ages of 5 and 14. A majority of these children approximately 70% worked in agriculture this is distinct from the historical practices of children helping their parents on family or community owned and operated farms. The 20th century saw a large growth of agribusiness corporations which plays significant strains on small farms and plantations globalization accelerated this colonial process where families were dispossessed and parents and children alike were forced to labor long difficult days in plantation fields as they became increasingly dependent on cash.
