When you want people to work together, you have to first stabilize the situation so that no one feels threatened. Before i offer extend an invitation to join the lab, i'll sit down with each lab member and get their feel for that person. That feedback helps me decide where to place them given their expertise. Some of our students come in with amazing first alther papers, and they've got years of research experience. But just their personalities and their willingness to work as part of the team is more important than that experience.
