It's a way to keep your landscape hydrated more during the dry season. And also, if your aquifers are high enough so that the tree roots can reach it,. The mycelia can pass it to other trees who maybe don't have deep enough roots to get to the groundwater table. Some of that can then evapotranspire into the dry season too.
