In 1996, as Chris was finishing up his PhD, a tank barge called North Cape was carrying around 3.9 million gallons of home heating oil when it hit Moonstone Beach in Rhode Island. Chris's advisor told him not to get involved because he didn't have media training and working on this oil spill was sure to draw attention.
