The Pendulum Starts to Swing Back the Other Way
In the eight and nine hundreds, by about 980, you also see a the pendulum starting to swing back. And this much greater a trade and travel and communication really made that possible. No one manages to restore an empire anything like what we saw with charlemagne. But europe, instead of this extremely broken down, fragmented patchwork of fiefdoms and local domains, starts to become instead, a sort of chess board of powerful kingdoms.
