After 10 years in the Air Force, he decided to switch careers. He worked as an interpreter for U.S. military and humanitarian agencies around the world. After a year of doing unpaid labor on defense contracts, he was able to get his master's degree from Georgia State University. His new career allowed him to work full-time with international aid groups like UNICEF or USAID without going through college.
