The Impossibility of Ethnographic Research

The ethnography part, an ethnographic design of the research, makes this research much more difficult than a research that would use, say, interviews or surveys. I basically lived for several months in each mine with the expatriate, with the managers. And so to answer your question, it has been very difficult because of the access problem. It is very important to understand that Chinese companies, whether private or state owned or state capital, as I call it, they are new to Africa. And they have to learn how to behave, like other companies. They have to adapt to local customs, local standards.
