McCarthy found no evidence of communist infiltration in Hollywood. So basically the justification for blacklisting was publicity. They were ruining people's careers and actually getting rid of some very talented people just so they looked like they weren't soft on communism. Some committed suicide, but there wasn't a formal list. And I think that subsequently what happened was there was so much shame. It's so much anger. People like Elia Kazan, director of On the Waterfront, who did name names. That there was a huge kind of rage anybody who had sided with Huac. No one on either side who survived it came through untouched by evil. None of us right, left or center emerged
