The Disappearance of San Antonio
Alvaro de Mosquita, Magellan's cousin, was given command of San Antonio. He didn't really have the experience to command a ship, but Magellan valued loyalty above all else at that point. This angered the ship's Portuguese pilot, a man named Estavo Gomez who felt that he should have been given command and quickly came to resent serving under an undeserving Captain. When San Antonio did not appear from its scouting mission, the fleet retraced their steps to try and locate the wayward vessel. But she was nowhere to be found. What exactly happened is uncertain because while the ship did return to Spain, the stories told by the survivors were likely concocted
