The Fascination With the Titanic
It's been 111 years since the Titanic sunk, but still people go down to see it. Why do you think this particular story entrances us in the way that it does? The unusual nature of the way the Titanic sank head first and the length of time it took to sink allowed the actions of those on board to become a morality play. And so the Titanic both offers answers and poses questions about how we would deal with when life looks like it's about to be snatched from us. It was so close to their end that in retrospect, I think its luxury and its technological prowess became symbols for a disintegrating social order. So I think that's a cocktail of why it remains so fascinating.
