Rome had a province called asia, basically consisting of the western coast of turkey to day and its hinterland. It was the furthest east that rome had come d there were tensions. Lian business men were getting filthy rich in the province of asia. Sabvy italians, backed by fear of rome, unhappy over extracted locals. And tax collectors were really loathed. Marius was fascinated. A crisis in the east would be the opportunity of a lifetime for the right man.
