Michael the eighth was a brave and admirable emperor who campaigned tirelessly against the latins for most of his reign. Although this was necessary to prevent a counter attack on constantinople, it would put a strain on the financial resources of the byzantine empire. Michael did extend the influence of the b tines, though, and the ambitions of the latins were curbed. So from the perspective of byzantine history, michael's reign was a high point. He died in 12 82 at the age of 59, and he would be succeeded by his son andronicus, who ruled as andronicus the second.
