The Unforeseen Tsunami

10 years ago this week, a 9.3 magnitude undersea mega thrust earthquake occurred off the coast of Sumatra. The resulting tsunami was one of the worst human disasters in history. 230,000 people died in 14 countries and more than $14 billion raised for humanitarian response. As part of the response, scientists needed to understand why it was such a devastating tsunami. And marine geologist David Tappen thought there might be a submarine landslide. But none of these were large enough to generate the tsunami.
