This tank was located in Boston's north end neighborhood, which has always been sort of a neighborhood in transition Who lived there in 1919 when the disaster happened in 1919 it's sort of the the 19 teens and 20s. often whole families would live in one or two rooms These reports sort of a gas city officials saying that you have these little basement rooms where families can't even stand up Right, and they're packed in you know four and five in a room. So it's very heavily built up neighborhood, but it's an immigrant neighborhood still so you have a On average of a very low-income neighborhood people getting by the best they can but it's also very vibrant with lots of street
