The Influence of Functional Programming Languages
In a lot of functional programming languages, there's no global mutable state. Most modern programming languages have first class functions. Some specific application verticals really make the most sense still in an imperative language. It might be shocking to some new programmers that we would do away with loops and try to always repeat ourselves just using recursion.
