The James Webb Telescope and the Future of Planets

The James Webb telescope will help a bit. It can get crude spectra of nearby planets. And the next step forward will be when the world's biggest ground-based optical telescope is built in Chile now. That's got a mirror 39 meters across, not one sheet of glass, but a mosaic of 800 sheets of glass. But that will collect enough light that it should be able to look at a star with a planet around it and separate out the tiny fraction of the light comes from the planet - which may give evidence for vegetation.
