In 1874 a mine explosion in West Virginia claimed the lives of 20 men. Sheila Walker's father and two daughters worked as nurse maids at Fairmont Coles No. 8 to care for those who had been injured. One man, Otis Harlan, told her about his strange dream that he would one day be able to dig down into the deep dark under the mountains with no fear or hesitation. He was never able to do it but still dreamed of being there when something went horribly wrong.
