The Difference Between Phoneme and Phonemic Inventory

There's certain kinds of sort of voicing delay that occurs in English with the voiced process, it gets a little bit more complicated than that. And we don't need to explore all of the variations there. The point is how the phoneme inventory might be quite small and yet you might have a larger full phonetic inventory for the language. For example, the donkey beater like Ridge, whose name I forget up here, had a very simple phoneme inventory, but once you had that final H introducing various changes across the language and had much larger phonetic inventory.
