In 16 75, in virginia, a white man named lambert grotton sold himself into lifetime slavery to satisfy a debt. Most servants were field hands, and most worked the traditional slave hours from cansea to cantsea. It was not unusual for a master to make a black or red man overseer of the white workers. Some historians say openly that it was fortunate that so many indentured servants fell by the wayside. There was a speedy winnowing out of riff raff which became the american people.
