The Importance of Legacy Admissions

The practice of giving extra weight to anyone whose relatives went to a school can be traced back to explicitly discriminatory policies that gained steam after World War I. In the past few years, there have been more serious calls to get rid of legacy preferences. Harvard convened two committees to consider whether or not they could increase diversity by reconsidering legacy preferences. They summarily concluded that ending legacy would jeopardize compelling institutional interests.
