The History of Mary Phelps Jacob
In 1914 Mary Phelps Jacob gets the US patent for what she calls the backless brassier. There's printed solid evidence of it existing in France before her. So did she, but she didn't coin the brassier term that she that was already in use. She clearly got some minor or major inspiration from French people.
